When Portugal won in 2018 with a soft but brilliant ballad - the standard for winning songs changed. Salvador's win opened up the door for artists like Duncan Lawrence to enter the contest as hot favorite with this well crafted song that deserved every single point it received.

Songs like this would rarely have hit the radar for a win, maybe top 5 at least. There were other songs with more mass hit appeal but when a song with this much soul comes onto the Eurovision stage, all the others just fade away from memory. He sings with the passion and power of any seasoned performer. This newcomer created something special with just a piano, a voice and spotlight. When that can win over the flashing lights, well, it shows that Europe has a much more refined taste than most Americans give credit.
